Encircled by wooded hills of the Annamalai Ranges, Munnar (meaning ‘three rivers’ in Malayalam) is located at the confluence of three mountain rivers – Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala which meet in the center of the Munnar town. Picnicking, trekking and sight seeing make Munnar a unique experience to natives and foreigners alike. During the British reign, Munnar was the summer holiday resort of British officials. Even today the place retains its colonial touch with golf courses, colonial bungalows etc.

Munnar hills are home to animals such as elephants and the rare Nilgiri Thars. Among the exotic flora, exceptional is the Neelakurinji, renowned for it blooms only in every 12 years. Kannan Thevan was an Adivasi (a tribal), who unraveled to a British planter and his team a tract of hills that was left largely unexplored and covered with thick forests. Today Kannan Devan Hills is a well-recognized name internationally. Though the pioneers tried many crops such as Coffee, Cinchona, Sisal and Cardamom, they discovered the crop best suited for this area was tea. Today, Munnar is known for its sprawling aromatic tea plantations around the world. Munnar is one of the best tea producers in the world.
